As I Have Loved You

The Scriptures would say that Jesus really is the ultimate expert when it comes to love and we're looking at what he said about love in the upper room. In John 13:34-35 Jesus says: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

The New Commandment Is Love

Jesus never said the cross would be the symbol of those who follow him. He actually did give us something that he said should be the the distinguishing mark of true Christian faith. He gave it in the upper room. It's better than a cross on a chain or even inked into your skin. It's way better than a fish on your bumper. What is that mark? In John 13:34-35 Jesus says: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Jesus And Judas And You

In the beginning of the story of Jesus in the gospel of John we are told that Jesus is full of grace and truth. Not grace or truth but grace and truth. Here in the story of the upper room we see both the grace and the truth of Jesus revealed against the dark background of human betrayal and satanic seduction.

Unless I Wash You, You Have No Part With Me

Life comes at us fast. Change is all around us. But the question is: What is it all for? “Well I'm just trying to get to the place where I do the things I want to do”. Okay, but what is that all for? Try as you might, the only way you are going to find out what life is for is to find out from the one who made us. What Scripture tells us is that here in Jesus we have the one who made us telling us and showing us what he is about, what we are about and what life is about.

Think Outcomes

Five times in the small book of Haggai the prophet calls us to think. He says, “Think carefully about your ways.” He wants us to think about 1.) our priorities, 2.) our perspectives and 3.) the outcomes of our actions. Our choices determine the outcomes in our lives. Scripture tells us this is a principle we especially have to think about in relationship to God because “Obedience to God is the most crucial factor in the outcomes of life”.

Faith is the root of our relationship with God, but obedience is the fruit. A.W. Tozer said: “The Bible recognizes no faith that does not lead to obedience, nor does it recognize any obedience that does not spring from faith. The two are opposites sides of the same coin.”

Think About God's Perspective

The Bible says the house of God today is a community of people in whom God dwells by His Spirit. It is built on the foundation of Christ with prayer and worship through acts of love, service, ministry, outreach and discipleship. Paul writes to the Ephesians and says the whole church grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work. As God builds his church through us there are also individual things that God wants to build into your life. It takes strength to build the things that God wants you to build.

Priorities

Sometimes we get a burst of passion, emotion or momentum about God and wanting to know him and build the things he wants us to build into our lives and communities but we run into difficulty and we fail to persevere. Like a slow leak in a tire, there is no explosive crisis, just a steady deflation until eventually we're running on flat tires spiritually. What happens next is predictable. The purposes of God are set aside. We begin to live for our own priorities and purposes. Our focus becomes our house, our life, our comfort, our success. God remains part of our life but not the heart of our life. We don't make a decision we just drift into a way of life that is mostly about us. Because we never really made a decision we don't think that much about it. So someone like Haggai has to come along and tell us to think.

Our Challenge And Calling

A lot of people first open their hearts up to spiritual life, and to Christ in particular, because something happens or something comes alive within them that creates a longing, a desire for spiritual life. People turn to Christ because they want forgiveness or fulfillment or help with some struggle. And Christ invites us to come with all of those issues and find life and friendship with God through Him. But what we discover when we come to him is that he wants us not only to receive forgiveness but to begin to follow him in our lives. He calls us to join him on a mission that is a big part of our purpose for life.

God's Compassion And Our Mission

It is clear from Luke 15 that religious people sometimes fail to understand what Christ is really about. Verses 1 & 2 say: Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. (that is, Jesus) 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." They didn't get it. They didn't understand that God wants people who are far from him to be found and restored to Him. That's what Jesus was all about and we need to be like him.

Jesus And His Resurrection

The message of Easter is that something profound happened in human history, something that is so dramatic and important that the implications affect all of our lives. God exists and he came to earth and became one of us for our redemption. In Jesus Christ God was incarnate, he became one of us, lived a perfect life, then died on the cross to pay for our sins. Then as Christians throughout the centuries have confessed in the Apostles' Creed: “On the third day He rose again from the dead.”

Jesus and His Sacrificial Death

The lessons we learn from scripture such as Mark 10:23-45 call us to see our own hearts more clearly. If we are going to follow Jesus we need a radical change of heart and a clear vision of his sacrifice for us. When the gospels tell the story of the first Palm Sunday they quote the prophet Zechariah who foretold the coming of Christ and said, “Behold your king comes to you gentle…” Make him the true king of your heart, and follow him.

Jesus And The Critique Of Religion

Did you know that Jesus had a problem with religion? In Jesus day there were some religious leaders who,if you entrusted the care of your soul to them, you would end up with something lifeless on the inside. That approach to religion is still very much with us. Jesus is still very much against it. It doesn't glorify God and it isn't good for people.

Jesus And The Call To Discipleship

When Jesus called people to follow him he spoke very clearly about what that means. In Luke 9:23 He said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me". This is Jesus' call to discipleship. Where did we ever get the idea that it is okay for some people to call themselves Christians and yet not obey this call to follow Christ as a disciple? One of the most common questions people wrestle with is this: “What should I do with my life?“ Jesus actually gives us the answer with just two words: follow me.

Jesus And The Dynamic Of Grace

Devotion to Jesus comes from the experience of grace. What is grace? The problem is it is easy to define it with a few words, you can say correctly: “Grace is amazing love that you don't deserve”. What it comes down to is that Jesus wants our devotion and devotion for Jesus comes from an experience of grace. In verse 47 of Luke 7, Jesus says, "He who has been forgiven little loves little". Throughout this story he is teaching us also that he or she who has been forgiven a lot loves a lot. That's the dynamic; the forces of change at work in grace.

Jesus And Temptation

It seems some of the biggest temptations we face are not related to things like stealing, murder or embezzling large sums of money but more the small things like saying a harsh word to our spouse or thinking only of ourselves before we think of someone else. We need to see clearly how Jesus deals with temptation and in this series we are looking at the stories of Jesus to see what we can understand about ourselves, our lives, our faith and our hope.

Jesus And The Father's Word

A couple of years ago a professor at Boston University, Stephan Prothero, wrote a book titled American Jesus: How the Son of God became a National Icon. In the book he said, “Jesus has become as American as apple pie, and everyone has their own favorite recipe”. What he meant was that while Jesus is very popular in America, a lot of people like to cook up their own idea of who Jesus is to them and how they like to think about him. We're trying to rediscover the real Jesus. How do we do that? Well the best way is by going back to look at how Jesus is revealed to us in the Bible. It is interesting that many people who claim to think highly of Jesus aren't so sure about the Bible.

Jesus And The Ultimate Question

Who is Jesus really? Back in the earliest portions of the Bible God had promised whoever was willing to listen that one day He would visit this world to bring redemption. He foretold, through prophets, throughout the centuries, in the Hebrew Scriptures that he would send a Redeemer or Savior. Once he arrived even John the Baptist had doubts about whether or not Jesus was the one sent by God. He asked, "Are you the one or do we keep looking?". Have you ever had questions, if not doubts, surface because Jesus isn't really what you expected or he did not solve some problem like you wanted him to? The truth is, Jesus doesn't always meet our expectations or fix our problems like we think he should. But the ultimate question is actually, "Are you the one?", and the answer to that question is "Yes".

We Will Not Fear

Psalm 46 has been called a battle hymn for believers in God. The issue of fear is in the forefront of Psalm 46. Fear is certainly one of the most primal emotions and it's been in the news a lot lately. There is no doubt some people are fearful about the economy but maybe your biggest fear is something else completely. We've had people this year discover a lump on their body and find out it's cancer and it's serious and they are in for a battle like nothing they have ever experienced before. There are a lot of things that can cause worry, anxiety or outright fear. But here's a Psalm that faces all the things that can go wrong and yet clearly says "We will not fear".

Why Were You Born?

Helmut Thieleke in his book, How the World Began, suggests that before going to a play we ask some fundamental questions: Who is the Playwright? Who is the Chief Actor? What is the play about? But, he suggests, most people step out onto the stage of life without asking these fundamental questions. Psalm 8 tells us what our role on the stage of life is. Emil Brunner says: “The most powerful of all spiritual forces is man’s view of himself, the way in which he understands his nature and his destiny; indeed, it is the one force which determines all the others which influence human life.”

The Sanctity Of Life

Many have wondered why the Christian faith has historically taken such a strong stand against abortion. Maybe you have wondered why so many Christians take it so seriously when there are other critical issues like the economy. Maybe you are a Christian and you have all the same questions. Well Psalm 139 has a lot to say about this. This Psalm takes you back to the time before you were born and tells you that God was personally, intimately and actively involved in your life, even then!

Renewal

A minister once introduced a message on Psalm 51 by saying:
"Tonight we come to something which if you have it, even if your life completely blows up, it can be repaired. If you've got it, no matter how broken your life, no matter how severely broken, it can be made whole. But, I'm afraid to name it, because when you hear it, when I use the English word, I'm afraid a lot of you will say, ‘O, that. I already know about that.’” The word, the thing that he was talking about is repentance. That's what Psalm 51 is about: life renewal through radical repentance.

My Soul Clings To You; Your Right Hand Upholds Me

One Scholar who wrote about Psalm 63 said that what verse 8 shows us is that between David and God there exists a “reciprocal relationship of active love". Now isn't that an amazing thing!
A person just like you and me in a real relationship, a friendship with God? God is infinite and personal. He wants a real relationship with you and he offers you his friendship and faithful love.

The Hopes And Priorities Of The New Year

The first thing we're told in Psalm 63 is that this is a psalm of David when he was in the desert of Judah. David was the most famous King of the Jewish people. He was a very human individual who went through all kinds of experiences and failures and struggles and came through them all. This is a song of faith that was written during a difficult time in David's life. The desert is a symbol of our hard times. It's a wasteland that offers very little to nurture or sustain life. But verse 7 says: Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. That's a pretty good theme verse for the year to come. The Psalm is saying there is a way to sing, to thrive, even in a wasteland.

God's Revelation

C. S. Lewis once wrote about Psalm 19: "I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world". This Psalm is a poem about how God reveals himself. There are three movements to this work. The first is God revealing himself in the world. The second is God revealing himself through his Word. Thirdly, there is a personal reflection and confession in response to God's revelation.

Although it is quite appropriate at this time of year to think about the image of the sweet child in the manger, probably what we most need is to get our perception of Jesus out of the manger into the midst of our lives and into our hearts and into the real issues of our world which are pretty deep and real.

The Strength Of My Heart

Psalm 73 is sometimes called a wisdom psalm because its purpose is to teach wisdom. One interesting feature of this psalm is that it begins with its conclusion. Verse 1 says; Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. This is going to be the conclusion, but Asaph is going to tell us how he had to come to that conclusion. It was quite a path he traveled.

The Better Path

There are a lot of times in life when it makes good sense to search for a better way, a better path to take. But how often do we ask if there is a better way to do life itself, a better path to take for all of life? The first Psalm offers us exactly that. It's the introduction to the whole book of Psalms, one of the greatest books of wisdom in the Scriptures and in all of literature. It presents all of life as a choice between two paths or ways.

A Psalm. For Giving Thanks.

The book of Psalms is famous for the way it speaks about two things: the pain of life and the praise of God. We often find it hard to put the two together. How can you be heartfelt about the praise of God if you are honest about the pain of life? What the psalms teach us is that it is not only possible to be thankful, it's important. When life is going well thankfulness reminds us that behind all of the good gifts of life there is a God who is good. When life seems filled with troubles, being thankful doesn't dissolve your troubles but it can transform your spirit. It can be an act of faith that gives you the strength to get through trouble without bitterness or foolishness.

Living With Confidence

God wants us to be confident. He has given us a whole group of Psalms that are called Psalms of Confidence. The 23rd Psalm is one of these. God intended that as we read, sing and meditate on these Psalms that they would instill within us confidence. In Psalm 23, this confidence comes from knowing that God is our shepherd and host, and as such, we will have everything that we need.

The Cross And Christian Essentials

For Christians the cross is central. It's written somewhere that after a famous Chinese Christian leader died in prison this note was found under his bed: “Christ is the Son of God. He died to atone for men's sin, and after three days rose again. This is the most important fact in the universe. I die believing in Christ.” When we talk about the cross of Christ, that is what we mean, something real that happened in history: God in human flesh, Jesus, dying for our sins and rising again from the dead. Now of course, the cross is not only an important fact of history, it is also something that affects all of us today. That's what we see in Hebrews chapter 10. This passage shows us the relationship between the cross and what you might call four Christian essentials.

The Cross And Christian Relationships

Our whole culture and society today seems to be creating a growing number of people who are filled with an unhealthy love for, and focus on, themselves. It creates a mindset and an attitude in which you live for yourself more than others. This leaves many people ill-equipped for anything other than a self-centered life in which their "quivering self" gives up on challenges very quickly and blames others because this self has to feel good about itself all the time. The irony is, this unbalanced love for one's self never actually leaves you feeling good about yourself. It is not only bad for your relationships, it's also bad for you. It creates unhealthy expectations and sets you up for continual disappointments. That's why it is so important that we grasp what Paul is saying in Philippians 2:1-11; how the cross calls us to a different approach to our relationships with each other.

The Cross And A Changed Life

We've been talking about the cross in recent sermons. What we mean by the cross is not just the physical symbol of a cross, but the truth of what happened when Christ died on the cross and what it means for us. The passage we're looking at in Ephesians speaks about this when it says Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a sacrifice for our sins. The cross is about Christ giving himself to pay for our sin so that we could be redeemed by His grace. Grace is undeserved love. You don't earn it, you receive it by placing your faith in Jesus, trusting Him as your Savior. That's the message of the cross.

The Cross And Christian Hope

The English word "hope" is often used for something that isn't much more than a wish. “I hope we get there on time”. “I hope we win the game”. “I hope the microphone works for church”. That's not what the Bible is talking about. In the Bible your hope is not just a wish. It is a conviction; a certainty. In the book of Hebrews hope is spoken of as an “anchor” for the soul. Hope is confidence that God will keep his promises even though it hasn't happened yet. One way hope is misunderstood is if it gets watered down into a wish when it is really a certainty.

The Cross And The End Of Boasting

When the Scriptures talk about boasting the issue isn't two friends teasing each other about who caught the biggest fish or ran the fastest mile. Nor is it talking about the person who has worked hard and done a good job and really accomplished something, sharing the joy of that accomplishment with close friends. No, this issue of boasting is different than that. It all has to do with the heart and with God. The boasting the Bible is concerned about is a boasting that reveals a heart that isn't humble in relationship to God and isn't relying on the grace of God. When boasting is a self-centered parading of every trophy possession and every real or imaginary accomplishment in the attempt to somehow demonstrate that you are somebody worth knowing and respecting it reveals the irony of a heart that is, at the same time, proud and pathetic. It reveals a heart puffed up with self-righteousness and undercut with self-doubt at the same time.

The Hard Edges Of The Cross

The message of the Bible is not just aimed primarily at our feelings. Don't misunderstand, feelings are important. But the changes that so many people want to experience in their feelings can only come when there are deeper changes. What the Bible offers us is not just comfort for when we are discouraged, or joy when we are sad but something much more substantial. What the Bible offers us is the cross and it’s a cross with hard edges. What that means is that the cross is not first of all about our feelings but about something that actually happened. The cross is about something God did for his glory and for our redemption. The cross is about the way in which God actually reveals His love for us and changes our relationship to Him.

The Cross Is Crucial

Some people might say that to speak of the cross as therapy for the heart is to trivialize it. It is true that in Christian faith the cross isn't just therapy for wounded hearts, it is the source of our total and eternal redemption. However, because the cross is the source of our redemption and reconciliation, it is also a demonstration of the heart of God toward us and a revelation of who we are to God, and out of all of that comes a great source of healing power for our lives today if we understand and believe it.

The Sovereign Lord Is My Strength

Why do we all so often struggle with weakness and unhappiness instead of joy and strength? Do we really know what it means to live our lives empowered by a faith that gives us joy no matter what? Like so many places in the Bible, the book of Habakkuk is telling us that faith in God can empower life with joy in spite of the circumstances of life, no matter what.

Poetic Justice

In the verses that we're looking at here in Habakkuk 2 God gives us not only a principle of faith, but also a promise. This Scripture teaches that when you see injustice and struggle with your questions you can choose to live by faith knowing that, in his time, God will judge the world with poetic justice and cover the earth in the knowledge of his glory.

The Righteous Will Live By Faith

In the book of Habakkuk faith comes to the forefront with the words, “The righteous will live by his faith.” Many scholars of the Bible believe those words capture the theme of the whole Bible. When God says to Habakkuk "the righteous one will live by his faith", he is teaching us that faith means trusting in who God is and in what God says. In the Bible, faith involves trusting God to be faithful, to act in harmony with his perfect character and fulfill what he has promised in the Holy Scriptures.

Honest Faith And Hard Questions

It is interesting that many arguments people bring up to question Christian faith are often brought up as if they are something new. Sometimes people who bring up the issue of suffering or injustice and evil in the world as an argument against God bring it up as if this were something that believers haven't really thought much about. Habakkuk's situation was unique to his time and place in history, but the feeling of being confused about what God is doing and why, that's something very familiar to us all. We all know what it's like to have hard questions in our hearts. So, how does honest faith handle these hard questions?

In Your Anger Do Not Sin

“What causes you to get angry?” Most of us think of people that are irritating or circumstances that don’t go the way we thought they would. You can be provoked to anger, but anger is something that you decide to be. It has been defined as the heart's response in an attitude of sinful disappointment to unmet desires and expectations. It is much more than just an emotion that needs to be managed, it is a moral decision - a response to our circumstances.

Pointed Prayer

In this passage in Acts, Paul launches into a prayer that is pointed. We discover that pointed prayer aims at deepening your knowledge of God and elevating your appreciation for His work in your life. What is the point of Paul’s prayer for wisdom and revelation? That a people who had been called out of one life and into a new life would possess a deeper knowledge of God.
His point here is not to be confused with a knowledge of the facts of God. Knowledge of the facts of God is not equal to knowledge of God personally, intimately, deeply. Paul is stressing the need for Christians to know God more deeply.

Authentic Christianity: Into The Future

I know the word "authentic” is in danger of being overused but I like it. Authentic means real or genuine but in today's culture it also implies sincere, not hypocritical. So authentic Christianity suggests a faith that is genuine in the sense that it is the kind of Christianity actually found in Scripture, but also the idea of people that are authentic in that they are sincere and honest.

A Seal And Sign Of Healing Grace

There is no question that baptism has been an important part of Christian faith from the earliest days of the Christian church. The book of Acts tells us that the Christian church was birthed in a baptism. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was poured down on the church to empower the Christians for life and ministry. Now we might think, “If the reality of the Holy Spirit has been given why go on baptizing with water? ” What happens then throughout Acts is that whenever someone or some group of people believe in Jesus they are baptized with water because baptism is an outward, visible symbol of an invisible and spiritual reality.

Strength Training

It is one thing to grow and it is another thing to grow strong. It is one thing for a movement to expand. It is another thing for it to endure. When we look at Acts 14 the issue is not just how the church expanded but how it endured. How it grew strong in a hostile culture. That's important because the principles revealed in these verses are relevant not only to Christian faith as a movement but to each individual in it.

The Call For Authentic Servanthood

There is a big difference between the idea of a perfect church and the reality of it, between the idea of authentic servant hood and the reality of it. It’s easy for a church of authentic Christians to become selfish, ingrown and distracted from its purpose, so we need to guard against this problem by integrating Biblical principles into the practice of Christ-like servanthood.

Unbelief: Its True Nature

One thing we see clearly in Acts is that authentic Christianity is not a plant that only grows and thrives under perfectly favorable conditions. In Acts you have the story of the followers of Jesus, thriving and growing under very adverse circumstances. One thing the church has always had to battle is unbelief. The unbelief the Christians encountered in Acts was not a passive unbelief but an antagonistic unbelief.

The Mysteries Of Authentic Faith

Authentic Christianity has to learn to live with the mysteries and uncertainties in life. Sometimes in the midst of these mysteries it is hard to see the point. There are two things that the book of Acts seems to make perfectly clear... 1. The ways of God are sometimes mysteriously unpredictable, and 2. Authentic Christianity means rejoicing in God in spite of the mysteries of faith.

Getting To The Heart Of Hypocrisy

The word hypocrisy actually means "play-acting". We all are vulnerable to this. But what is the sin beneath hypocrisy? The answer is "dishonesty". One of the biggest accusations against Christians is that they are hypocrites. And of course that is correct. We are hypocrites. However, it is seldom pointed out that this is why we are Christians in the first place. We need Christ as our Savior. Without Christ we are all condemned to an inconsistency between word and deed. Christ is the only one who lived a perfect and consistent life.

Life In The Spirit

Air is something that you can't see, but don't think that because something is invisible it is weak or unimportant. It is because of the quality of air as invisible and yet powerful that God compares air, wind and breath to His Holy Spirit. In fact, the words for spirit, breath and wind in the Bible are identical. The wind is a physical reflection of the spiritual truth that the Holy Spirit is real and powerful.

The Roots Of Authentic Christianity

We need to understand the gift of the Holy Spirit is an important part of the gift of redemption. The gospel is not that you have to save yourself by trying to be good enough to earn God's love. It is not that! It is that God, in love, sent his Son, to pay for our sins through His death on the cross. Jesus promised that if we come to him, admit that we need him and trust in him as our Savior he will redeem us by his grace. He also made it clear that what he gives us when we turn to Him is not only forgiveness but Himself to live in us. When you believe in Him He comes in to guide, empower and change you from within. His resurrection and ascension are the proof that He is alive and he will not only forgive our sins but live in us by His Holy Spirit if we trust in Him.

(Joseph Stowell, Following Christ, p. 3) Throughout this series of messages on Following Jesus we've been hearing that one voice that claims to be the voice we should follow.

The Confrontation Of The Resurrection

In first Corinthians Paul is writing to a large Christian church in one of the greatest ancient cities in Greece and he has to confront their resistance to the reality of the resurrection with solid evidence and careful reasoning. Paul presents this evidence and makes arguments because, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he wants to persuade us of something very important.

Palm Sunday: You Don't Always Get What You Deserve

If you like irony, Palm Sunday is for you. Irony is when there is an incongruence, a difference between what is said and the reality, or what is expected and what actually happens, or what things look like and what they really mean. In the story of Palm Sunday, Jesus comes into Jerusalem with the crowd shouting his praises but at the end of the week they are screaming for his blood.

Jesus And Politics

What does it mean to follow Jesus when it come to politics? There are some things that seem clear in the Bible. First, God has ordained government for the good of society. Second,God has limited the authority of government. Peter reminds us in Act 5 that "we must obey God rather than man". Third, in Matthew 5 Jesus called us to be salt and light in our culture.

Sex And The Sacred Journey

What we need to do is look at sex and the sacred journey. What I mean by the sacred journey is a life in which we follow Jesus. How does sex relate to following Christ? Our sexuality is one of the primary areas of life where we experience the ravages of sin, therefore it is also one of the main issues in life that Jesus came to redeem. What does it mean to follow Jesus in this aspect of life?

Following The Bread From Heaven

What Jesus says in John 6:48 is powerful and poetic. He says, "I am the bread of life". In some ways it doesn't sound very dramatic or impressive. He doesn't say, "I'm the freshest sushi of life" or "I'm the caramel macchiato of life". He says, "I'm the bread of life". That means that he is not a luxury, he is essential.

To Follow Christ We Must Live In Faith

Jesus wanted his followers to live the same way he lived; not to worry but to live in faith as we follow him. One thing that means is that when Jesus talks about our money, it really isn't about the money. It's about something more basic. It's about faith and what it means to follow him. There are three things he tells us in Luke 12: Don't worry about your life, trust in God & be fearless.

Christ Our Completion

In the Christian life we must fight to keep a relationship with God based on the merits of Christ, not our own. We can often substitute God's grace for moralism, or religious performance. In this sermon Saul Seibert reminds us that as Christians, we've been redeemed from the debt that sin incurred through Christ’s work on the cross. Therefore we must resist the lure of legalism by continually re-orientating ourselves to the gospel.

The Father Knows

In a culture in which is so easy to lose your soul, to throw it away, what Jesus gives us in the Lord's prayer is not only a way to pray but a way to find our souls, to find life and to live it. Now, before Jesus teaches us this prayer it seems there is at least one thing he wants us to get straight first.
Prayer: Pure And Simple

One of the most ancient traditions of Christian faith was to see the Lord's Prayer as a summary of the Christian life and as an important means of teaching Christian spirituality to new converts and believers. This is the prayer Jesus gave us to teach us how to pray. A prayer that not only teaches us how to pray, but also teaches the essentials of spiritual life.

The Fullness Of Worship

To worship the God of the Bible is to worship pure goodness, greatness, beauty, justice, wisdom and perfect love. In that sense God is absolutely worthy of our worship and to worship him is simply to see who he really is, what is at the heart of all of life and reality, to enjoy and celebrate a relationship with God and respond in a way that is healthy and life-giving for us.

The Confusing Path Toward Confident Faith

When we look to Jesus, we do not find the type of “trying harder” faith that is often suggested by well-meaning Christians. Instead, we find him teaching us about a faith that will face our situations. This is the kind of faith that pleases God. In the midst of the chaos of life and at the end of your resources, you are just where God wants you to be. This is the moment of chaotic faith. This is what Charles Spurgeon called “seeking faith.” Chaotic faith is marked by desperation. How does confident faith grow from the moment that we have called Chaotic faith? The faith that emerges from the chaos is ultimately a gift from God.

Living a Fruitful Life Cultivated by the Living Christ

Starting at verse nine in Colossians 1 we come to a continuation of Paul’s prayer for the Colossian church. It is here that Paul unpacks some remarkable expressions that give us an understanding of the nature of God. In the closing statement he prays “so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him."
To please Him... That statement would rattle a lot of people’s understanding on the nature of God who is Often seen as consumed with wrath -- continually venting His displeasure with us. If you were to ask people, “Do you feel it is possible to truly please God?” most likely you would be met with some hesitation. But what do we see here? “To please Him” is one of the first expressions that Paul presents that reveals the nature of God. This is critical. If you do not believe that it is possible to live a life upon which God would look and take pleasure in and declare that He is pleased, how likely is it that you will pursue such a life? Your life would be reduced to nothing more than an exercise in futility.

Christ & Your Life

When it comes to your life there are a lot of things that are important, but what's most essential? In this passage of scripture Jesus is with his disciples on the way to the garden of Gethsemane to pray, and then be arrested and taken to the cross. It is in this setting that we might expect Jesus to stress what is most important. So what does he do? He talks about their relationship to him. He used the image of a vine and its branches in order to illustrate what's most essential for his disciples and for us. In John 15:5 He said: I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

The Surprising Way God Helps You Grow

True Christianity is not a program for self-improvement but a living relationship with Christ in which his life comes into you and changes you. Our core responsibility as Christians is to cultivate the relationship with Christ that will make us fruitful in life.
In this passage of Scripture, John 15, Jesus is using the image of a grapevine to teach us about fruitful spiritual growth. Verse 5 gives us the real heart of the passage when Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Real Life & Real Change in the Real World

What does Jesus mean here when he talks about fruit and fruitfulness in life? When the Bible talks about fruit it is talking about deep positive changes in your life. In some places it also suggests the idea of a deep and positive influence on others for Christ. The best way to see this is to look at another passage, Galatians 5:22-23, which says; But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. In the vine and the branches Jesus gives us an image to tell us how those kinds of changes can come about in our lives.

Is the Christian Faith Homophobic

One of the first things you discover when you study what the Bible says about homosexuality is that the Bible doesn't focus much on the idea of inward orientation or sexual preference. Its focus is primarily on what people actually do. It's about homosexual practice not preference. Violence, aggression, depression promiscuity, infidelity, all of these can be experienced as predispositions that pull us away from obedience to God, but none of them exempt us from responsibility for our actions. We should not minimize the struggles of people with persistent homosexual desires and attractions. But God sees everything, and understands all the factors that influence our behaviors. He offers help and hope. The church needs to reflect that.

Is the Christian Faith Oppressive to Women?

Often, the challenge of addressing the charge that the Christian faith is oppressive to women is based on the idea that “equality” must be seen as being “identical” – any differences are viewed therefore as evidence of inequality. But the scriptures present a view of equality that is unique among other competing perspectives, and it is that women are both absolutely equal to and uniquely complementary with men.

Is Christianity Narrow and Intolerant?

One of the things that is distinctive to the Christian movement, seen in the life of Jesus and in the writings of the New Testament, is that it brings both people who are religiously upright and people who have been scandalously sinful, violent, and promiscuous together in an attitude of love, unity, and acceptance. This however has always been a problem in the church. In one example we even find Paul in his letter to the Romans encouraging them to stop judging each other and accept those whose faith is weak without passing judgment on disputable matters because God has accepted him.

How Can Christianity Claim To Be The Truth For Everyone?

One popular objection to the Christian faith today is it's exclusive claims to ultimate truths and morality. How can Christianity claim to be the truth for everyone? Michel Foucault warned us to be suspicious of such claims. And yet so does Jesus when talking about the religious leaders of his day, whose heart was not to shepherd the people but to exercise power over them. Jesus however not only claimed to be the good shepherd but proved it by laying down his life for his people.

What's So Important about the Death of Jesus

One thing that comes through when you read the Bible is that the teaching of Jesus is important, but it is not most important. Jesus said dying was the reason for his coming. Let's look again at what he said. Matthew 20:28: the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Look especially at the last phrase. What's so important about the death of Jesus? The death of Jesus is important because He came to give Himself as a ransom for many.

The Whisper of the Lord God Almighty

Though Elijah has seen God powerfully work in his life, he is still driven into desperate hiding. He has forgottnen God's sovereignty even though his own prayers confess that he is the "Lord God Almighty".

I Have Had Enough

In the past Elijah was strong because he kept his eyes on God and trusted in God. But in his situation in chapter 19 it seems as if he is not looking at God. He sees the problems, the circumstances, the threats and dangers. It is as if God gets very small in his sight and the people and problems get very big and it overwhelms him. What this teaches us is that no matter how much you know or how well you've handled problems in the past you sometimes have to fight to keep your eyes on God in the present.

Prayer - Knocking on Heaven's Door

Prayer is powerful when in your prayers you truly pray like a servant of God. James says when you look at Elijah you are seeing an example of how you should pray. Look at what James says again. James 5:16-18 ... The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

The Lord - He Is God

A lot of things in life require a commitment. You have to come to the point where you see the truth and live in light of it. What makes the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18 so relevant for us today is the fact that the underlying issues for people then are the same for us today. God through Elijah is addressing the people's double-mindedness which kept them from committing to God. Today we are in danger of the same thing.
